The current artificial intelligence (AI) designs released by Chinese startup DeepSeek have spurred turmoil in the technology sector following its introduction as a potential rival to leading U.S.-based firms.

DeepSeek composed in a paper last month that it trained its DeepSeek-V3 design with less than $6 million worth of calculating power from what it says are 2,000 Nvidia H800 chips to attain a level of performance on par with the most sophisticated models from OpenAI and Meta.

Those chips are less innovative than the most cutting edge chips on the market, which go through export controls, though DeepSeek declares it overcomes that downside with ingenious AI training strategies.
